Mountain Limited / Frostburg Flyer Excursions

Travel back through time aboard our restored diesel locomotive on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. You’ll climb through the Allegheny Mountains on the Western Maryland #501, a GP30 built in the 1960’s, easily recognizable due to its high profile and stepped cab roof, unique among American locomotives. A narrator will be on-board to provide you with interesting historical facts and significant cultural locations along the route to Frostburg.

Our Mountain Limited / Frostburg Flyer excursions depart from Cumberland to Frostburg at 11:30am on weekdays and Saturdays and at 1:00pm on Sundays. Dining Class guests enjoy a 3-course meal consisting of salad, choice of entrée, and a signature dessert of Chef’s choice while riding in our vintage dining cars. Standard Coach general seating are also available. A Snack Bar is available to all passengers. Boarding begins approximately 30 minutes before departure; each excursion is 3 hours round-trip.

Due to the historic nature of our equipment, limited handicapped seating is available. Please call our office, 1-800-TRAIN50, to discuss your needs.

All on-board sales are cash only.  We do not accept credit cards while on-board at this time.

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad makes every effort to maintain its schedule, but reserves the right to alter schedules or equipment as operating conditions warrant.

Two Classes of Service

Standard Coach

is our most affordable class, with comfortable padded, high-back, bench-style seats creating a great setting for families or large groups.
A cash snack bar is also available.  Seating is unreserved on a first come, first serve basis.


Dining Service

includes lunch aboard our beautifully restored dining cars. Meals are prepared on-board and served on the way to Mountain View. Dessert is served on the return trip. Reservations must be made several days in advance.


For any ticket option that includes lunch, guests will be given a choice of entrees at the time the reservation is being placed. All menu selections must be made at this time. Changes may be made until one week prior to departure date.

Cancellations must be made at least one week prior to departure date for full credit which can be used for up to one year. Cancellations after that will be given credit for the cost of the ticket only which can be used for up to one year. Food costs cannot be credited due to commitments already in place.
