Why Volunteer?



Be a part of Western Maryland railroad history by volunteering at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

By joining our team, you become part of a select group of individuals dedicated to preserving and presenting American railroading history.

It takes a lot of people to run a railroad. Scenic Railroads are no exception, especially when some of the locomotives are steam engines. The WMSR has volunteer positions for all interests, abilities and skill levels. This includes Car Host, Narrators and assisting station personnel. In addition, there are a limited number of openings for volunteers to clean and work on passenger equipment and locomotives.

Volunteers are scheduled as often or as little as they wish. Hours are flexible, to meet the volunteer's scheduling requirements.

Becoming a WMSR volunteer has a wealth of privileges. You get to ride in the coaches for free* and bring a non-member guest along at a group rate. You'll also receive advance notice of excursions and special events. You can even help out cleaning, maintaining, and repairing vintage equipment from coaches to steam and diesel locomotives.

If you've always dreamed of being a conductor or brakeman, there's an opportunity for you here. No existing skills are required, we'll teach you everything you need to know.**

* Must present membership card to depot agent and will be allowed to ride on a space available basis.

** Train service personnel (not including car hosts or other non-train controlling personnel) are required to pass yearly written examinations, pre-job and random drug screenings, and must progress through the WMSR training curriculum.
