Travel back through time aboard the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with our 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0, Mountain Thunder, or our restored diesel engine. You’ll climb through the spectacular scenery of the Allegheny Mountains. A narrator will be aboard to provide you with information about the scenery, history, and culture along your route.
Standard Coach trains depart at 11:30 AM from the Western Maryland Station in Cumberland, Maryland. The train returns to the Station at approximately 3:00 PM. There will be a 1 1/2 hour layover in Frostburg where you may enjoy lunch, watch us turn the engine on a turntable, investigate the shops and restaurants on Frostburg’s Main Street and visit the Thrasher Carriage Museum which is free to our guests. To reach Main Street in Frostburg, guests will be required to climb a steep staircase with 88 steps or a steep sidewalk which is a little longer but easier than the steps! Read More +
You will be seated in one of our restored coaches. Most seats are located by large windows and seat two on either side of the aisle. Seating in Standard Coach for individuals is not reserved; it is on a first come, first served basis.Handicapped seating is available in Standard Coach. Please note in your reservation, or call our offices, to alert us to your handicap needs. Aboard the train there is a small gift shop and snack car.
Reservations are recommended as trains can sell out. Please plan to arrive by 10:45 AM to pick up your tickets at the Ticket Office located on the second floor of the Station. If you have a guest who requires additional time boarding, please be ready to board approx. 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure and we will do our best to accommodate them before general boarding begins. Please adhere to boarding instructions given on when and where to board.
For our guests that enjoy biking, you may choose to take along your bike for a small fee and ride one way on the train and take advantage of the Allegheny Highland Bike Trail. Call for additional information and to place your reservations.
Premium Coach is available on most days. Guests will have assigned seating in one of our more comfortable and spacious coaches. Seating is limited and seat assignments will be based on the time reservations are made, booking early is the key! Handicapped seating is available in car #726.
Parlor Car Service is available on most days. Guests will have assigned seating in our spacious parlor car. Seating is limited and seat assignments will be based on the time reservations are made. A cash bar will be available. Guests must be age 13 or older. All seats in this car are handicapped accessible.
First Class Seating is available on Saturdays and occasional Sundays at 11:30 AM. Advanced reservation with a minimum of 5 days notice is required. Read More +
First Class passengers are seated at reserved tables in our restored dining cars or cafe car. Handicapped seating is available in Car #851 and #200. Guests confined to a wheelchair please call our offices to check on seat availability. Lunch is served aboard the train during the trip to Frostburg. Dessert and coffee are served during the return trip to Cumberland. Seating is limited and seat assignments will be based on the time reservations are made. Passengers will be given a choice of entrees at the time the reservation is made. All menu selections must be made at this time. Changes can be made to the menu selections until five days prior to departure time. Cancellations must be made at least five days prior to the departure date for full credit which can be used for up to one year. Cancellations within five days will be given credit for the cost of the ticket only which can be used for up to one year. Food costs cannot be credited due to commitments already in place.
For special occasions you can order a cake, cupcakes or flowers to be placed on your table with a 5 day notice. Ask for more information when placing your reservation.
